In short

Skin needling with Dermapen 4 creates controlled micro-channels that trigger collagen renewal, softening acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores and pigmentation. At Skin Avenue it is tailored and tone-safe across all skin types, including melanin-rich skin where needling is often preferred over laser.

The treatment

What is skin needling, also called microneedling?

Skin needling and microneedling are two names for the same treatment. A fine array of very small needles makes thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin, and your body responds by building fresh collagen and elastin as it repairs them.

You may see it called skin needling, microneedling, collagen induction therapy or by the device name Dermapen 4. They all describe the same idea, using a precise, sterile needling tip to prompt the skin to renew itself from within. Because the treatment works with your own healing process rather than removing tissue with heat or acid, it is one of the most versatile ways to improve texture, scarring and firmness across the whole face.

At Skin Avenue we use the Dermapen 4, a professional, motorised microneedling device. Every treatment begins with a personalised skin assessment so needle depth, spacing and aftercare are matched to your skin, your concern and your Fitzpatrick tone. That tailoring is what keeps the treatment both effective and comfortable, and it is the reason we can offer skin needling safely to a much wider range of skin tones than many heat-based options allow.

How Dermapen 4 works

Dermapen 4 is a precision microneedling device that creates thousands of fine, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny channels trigger the skin's natural repair response, prompting fresh collagen and elastin. Over a course of treatments this renewal softens scarring, refines texture and helps the skin look firmer and more even.

The device uses a disposable, sterile needle cartridge that glides across the skin at high speed, with the depth dialled precisely for each area of the face. Delicate zones such as around the eyes are treated at a shallower depth, while thicker skin or firmer scar tissue can be worked at a deeper setting. This control is the ranking difference between a professional Dermapen 4 treatment and a home roller, which cannot deliver consistent depth and can tear rather than channel the skin. Immediately after treatment the micro-channels also allow tailored serums to absorb more readily, which is why we finish with calming, barrier-supporting products chosen for your skin.

The visible improvement is gradual and genuine. Collagen remodelling continues for weeks after each session, so the skin keeps refining between visits. This is why we plan skin needling as a short course rather than a single treatment, and why the results tend to look natural rather than sudden.

What it treats

Concerns skin needling can help.

Because it renews collagen across the whole face, skin needling is one of the most versatile treatments we offer. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

01

Acne scarring

Softens the depth of rolling and boxcar acne scars by rebuilding collagen in the scarred tissue over a course of sessions.

02

Fine lines

Firms and smooths early lines around the cheeks, mouth and eyes as fresh collagen and elastin develop.

03

Enlarged pores

Refines the look of open or congested pores by improving the strength and structure of the surrounding skin.

04

Pigmentation

Helps even out pigmentation and post-acne marks. For melanin-rich skin we use a conservative protocol. Melanin-rich skin.

05

Uneven texture

Smooths rough, bumpy or dull texture for a more refined, even and healthy-looking surface.

06

Loss of firmness

Supports firmer, more resilient skin by encouraging the collagen and elastin that give skin its bounce.

Why clients choose it

Six reasons to consider
skin needling.

Honest, realistic benefits, matched to your skin at a personalised assessment.

01

Works with your skin

It uses your own natural healing and collagen, rather than heat or strong acids, so improvement looks natural.

02

Versatile

One treatment can address scarring, texture, pores, fine lines and firmness across the whole face.

03

Tone-safe when tailored

Often preferred over many lasers for darker skin because it does not rely on heat that can trigger pigmentation.

04

Short, manageable downtime

Most clients experience redness for around a day or two, then return to their normal routine with gentle care.

05

Progressive results

Collagen keeps remodelling between sessions, so skin continues to refine over the weeks that follow.

06

Comfortable

A numbing cream is applied first, so most clients find the treatment very tolerable and calm.

What to expect

Your skin needling visit.

A calm, step-by-step treatment at Osborne Park or West Leederville.

01

Assessment

We assess your skin, tone and concern, then agree needle depth and a realistic plan together.

02

Prep & numb

Skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied so the treatment stays comfortable.

03

Dermapen 4

We glide the device across each zone at its tailored depth, creating fine collagen-triggering channels.

04

Soothe & guide

We finish with calming, barrier-supporting serums and give you your aftercare and next-session plan.

Suitability

Am I a good candidate for skin needling?

Skin needling suits most healthy skin looking to soften acne scarring, refine texture and pores, ease fine lines or improve overall firmness and evenness.

It is a good fit if you want a versatile treatment that builds gradual, natural improvement and you are comfortable with a day or two of redness. It pairs well with our other Korean-method treatments in a longer-term plan, and it is frequently the treatment we reach for when someone with deeper skin wants a scarring or texture result without the heat of laser.

There are times when we will recommend waiting or choosing a different treatment first. Skin needling may not be suitable if you have active acne breakouts or infections in the treatment area, active cold sores, certain skin conditions, are taking specific medications, or are pregnant. This is not an exhaustive list, which is exactly why we begin with a personalised assessment. If needling is not right for you now, we will tell you honestly and suggest a better path, such as a HydraFacial or a medical peel.

A note on suitability. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active breakouts, cold sores, keloid scarring tendency and some medications can affect whether skin needling is appropriate. Please raise these at your assessment so we can plan safely. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.
Melanin-rich & darker skin

Tone-safe skin needling, honestly explained.

Microneedling is often preferred over many laser treatments for darker Fitzpatrick types because it does not rely on heat that can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation. At Skin Avenue we tailor needle depth and aftercare to your skin so the treatment stays safe and comfortable across all skin tones.

Being honest matters more than a marketing promise. For Fitzpatrick IV to VI there is still a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, where the skin darkens in response to inflammation. No treatment is zero risk. What we can do is lower that risk with a conservative approach, and we will always explain it plainly before you decide.

  • A conservative first session at a shallower depth to see how your skin responds
  • Careful spacing between sessions so the skin fully calms before the next
  • Priming and aftercare guidance to support the barrier and reduce inflammation
  • Diligent daily SPF, which is essential for protecting your result and preventing PIH
  • An honest conversation if we feel a gentler treatment is the safer first step

Downtime & aftercare

What to expect afterwards.

Simple aftercare protects your result. We give you a written plan tailored to your skin at every visit.

First 24 hoursImmediately after

Skin is usually pink and warm, similar to mild sunburn, and may feel tight. Keep it clean and hydrated, avoid make-up, heat, exercise and sweating, and let the skin settle.

Day 1 to 2Settling

Redness eases and most clients return to normal activities. Cleanse gently, hydrate, and avoid active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids until we say they are fine to reintroduce.

Day 2 to 5Renewing

Some clients notice slight dryness or fine flaking as the skin renews. Do not pick or exfoliate. Keep the barrier supported with the calming products we recommend.

Every dayNon-negotiable

Diligent daily SPF is essential. Fresh skin is more sensitive to sun, and for melanin-rich skin, sun protection is key to preventing post-inflammatory pigmentation and protecting your result.

Weeks to monthsThe result

Collagen-driven improvement such as scar softening continues to develop. A course of sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, delivers the most noticeable, lasting change.

Aftercare in short. Gentle cleansing, plenty of hydration, no active ingredients for a few days, no picking or exfoliating, and diligent sun protection. Following the plan supports healing and helps you get the best result from each session. Individual results vary.
Questions

Skin needling, answered.

Is skin needling the same as microneedling? 01

Yes. Skin needling and microneedling are two names for the same treatment. You may also hear it called collagen induction therapy or referred to by the device name, Dermapen 4. They all describe using fine, controlled micro-channels to prompt the skin to renew its own collagen.

What device do you use? 02

We use the Dermapen 4, a professional, motorised microneedling device with sterile single-use cartridges. It lets us dial needle depth precisely for each area of the face, which is what makes a clinic treatment more controlled and effective than a home roller.

Does microneedling hurt and is there downtime? 03

A numbing cream is applied first, so most clients find the treatment comfortable. Afterwards skin is usually pink and warm, similar to mild sunburn, for around twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Most clients return to normal activities the next day with gentle aftercare.

How many sessions do I need for acne scars? 04

Acne scarring usually responds best to a course of treatments spaced about four weeks apart, with the number tailored to your skin. Results build gradually as collagen renews. Your therapist gives you a realistic plan and honest expectations at your assessment.

Is skin needling safe for darker or melanin-rich skin tones? 05

It is often a preferred choice for melanin-rich skin because it does not use heat that can trigger pigmentation. We adjust depth and aftercare to your skin and tone, and start conservatively, so the treatment stays safe and effective across all Fitzpatrick types. There is still a real risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, so no treatment is zero risk, and we explain this honestly before you decide.

What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH? 06

PIH is darkening of the skin that can follow inflammation, and it is more common in Fitzpatrick IV to VI. We reduce the risk with a conservative first session, careful spacing, supportive aftercare and diligent daily SPF, but we never claim it is impossible. If we feel a gentler treatment is safer for you first, we will say so.

When will I see results? 07

You may notice fresher, smoother skin within a week or two, while collagen-driven improvements such as scar softening continue to develop over several weeks to months. A course of sessions delivers the most noticeable, lasting change.

What aftercare is needed? 08

We provide simple aftercare guidance, which usually includes gentle cleansing, hydration, avoiding active ingredients for a few days and diligent sun protection. Following the plan supports healing and helps you get the best result from each session.

Skin needling vs HydraFacial, which should I choose? 09

They do different jobs. Skin needling renews collagen to improve scarring, texture, pores and firmness over a course, with a day or two of downtime. A HydraFacial cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates for an instant glow with no downtime. Many clients use both in a plan. We recommend the right starting point at your assessment.

Can it help enlarged pores and uneven texture? 10

Yes. By strengthening the structure of the surrounding skin and renewing collagen, skin needling can refine the look of open or congested pores and smooth rough, uneven texture for a more even, healthy-looking surface.

How much does skin needling cost in Perth? 11

Pricing depends on your skin, your concern and whether you have a single session or a course, so we confirm it at your personalised assessment. You can enquire or book online, or call us on 0402 991 762.

How should I prepare for my appointment? 12

Come with clean skin where possible and let us know your full skin history and any medications at your assessment. We may ask you to pause certain active ingredients or treatments beforehand. Avoid sunburn and heavy sun exposure in the days before your session.

Who should not have skin needling? 13

Skin needling may not be suitable during active breakouts or infections in the area, active cold sores, a tendency to keloid scarring, certain skin conditions or medications, or during pregnancy. This is not an exhaustive list, which is why we always assess first and will suggest a safer option if needling is not right for you.

How often can I have skin needling? 14

Sessions are usually spaced about four weeks apart to let the skin fully renew between treatments. After your initial course, occasional maintenance sessions can help sustain your result. We plan the timing around your skin at your assessment.

Where can I have skin needling? 15

Dermapen 4 skin needling is available at both of our Perth clinics, in Osborne Park at 2/221 Main Street and in West Leederville at 21 Oxford Close. You can book at whichever is more convenient for you.

Why Skin Avenue

Skin needling, the tone-safe way.

We combine the Korean barrier-first method with a heat-free Dermapen 4 protocol, tailored to your skin and your Fitzpatrick tone. Rather than reaching for the harshest option, we build healthy, resilient skin first, then plan your needling course around real, honest expectations.

Every plan is personalised, every protocol is chosen for your tone, and every outcome we promise is realistic. That is why so many clients with melanin-rich skin choose us for scarring and texture, and why we always start with a proper assessment rather than a template.
