What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a controlled resurfacing treatment. A carefully chosen blend of skin acids is applied to the surface of the skin for a short, monitored time to loosen and lift the outermost layer of tired, dull and congested cells. As that surface layer sheds, fresher and more even skin is revealed underneath, and the skin is prompted to renew itself. Peels are graded by how deeply they work. Skin Avenue uses superficial, medical-grade peels, the gentlest category, which work at the surface rather than deep in the skin.

Our signature system is the LHA·LA peel, built around Lipo-Hydroxy Acid and Lactic Acid. It is designed to give you the clarity and glow people associate with chemical peels, while staying comfortable and tolerable, and while keeping the risk profile appropriate for a wide range of skin types and tones. If you have been searching for a chemical peel in Perth but have been nervous about redness, raw skin or long recovery, this is the gentler, considered end of peeling.

How an LHA·LA peel works

Lipo-Hydroxy and Lactic Acid resurfacing

A LHA·LA peel combines Lipo-Hydroxy Acid and Lactic Acid to exfoliate the skin's surface in a controlled, even way. LHA is a gentle, oil-loving acid that works slowly at the very surface of the skin and inside the pore, which makes it well suited to congestion and unevenness without harsh stinging. Lactic Acid is a water-loving alpha-hydroxy acid known for being one of the milder, more hydrating members of its family, so it resurfaces while helping the skin hold moisture. Together they lift dull, congested cells to reveal smoother, clearer and more even skin underneath, and encourage healthy cell turnover over a course of treatments.

Because both acids are chosen for their gentleness and because we apply them at a measured strength for a measured time, the LHA·LA system is designed to resurface without the aggressive, sheeting peel that many people fear. That control is the point. It is what lets us offer resurfacing to skins that would not be candidates for a stronger, deeper peel.

Where mandelic and other acids fit

If you have researched peels for pigmentation or for darker skin, you may have read about mandelic acid peels. Mandelic is a large-molecule alpha-hydroxy acid that penetrates slowly and evenly, which is why it is often talked about as a gentle option for melanin-rich skin. It sits in the same family of considered, superficial acids as the LHA and lactic acid in our system. The most important thing is not the single ingredient name but matching the right acid, the right strength and the right protocol to your skin and your concern. At your assessment your therapist explains which peel is appropriate for you and why, rather than defaulting to one recipe for everyone.

What a chemical peel treats

A LHA·LA peel is used for pigmentation, acne and congestion, enlarged pores, rough or uneven texture, dullness and the early signs of ageing. A Larimedical option is available for red acne scars. Your therapist selects the right strength and protocol for your concern and skin at your assessment. Common concerns we help with peels:

Pigmentation & melasma Acne & congestion Enlarged pores Uneven texture Dullness & dehydration Early signs of ageing

Peels support gradual improvement in these concerns rather than removing them completely. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

Soothe & guide

We calm and protect the skin, apply SPF, and give you clear aftercare so your skin heals well.

Most peel appointments take around 30 to 45 minutes, with your first visit a little longer because it begins with a personalised skin assessment. Many clients describe the sensation as a mild tingling or warmth during application. Afterwards the skin may look slightly pink and feel a touch tight, and over the following days you may notice mild dryness or light flaking. Stronger protocols may cause more visible peeling. Your therapist explains exactly what to expect for your chosen peel before you begin, so there are no surprises.

Am I a good candidate?

Peels suit most people who want to soften pigmentation, clear congestion, refine texture or brighten a dull complexion, and who are happy to work in a short course rather than expecting a single miracle session. Because a chemical peel resurfaces the skin, it is not suitable for everyone at every moment. We will discuss adjusting or postponing your peel if you have active or broken skin, an untreated skin infection, certain medical or skin conditions, or if you are using strong prescription actives such as some retinoids. Peels are generally not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so we will discuss timing and gentler alternatives at your assessment. This is a guide only and never a substitute for an in-person assessment.

Peels for darker and melanin-rich skin, honestly

Chemical peels must be selected carefully for melanin-rich skin to avoid triggering pigmentation. At Skin Avenue we choose gentle, well-tolerated formulations and build intensity gradually, which makes our peels suitable for all Fitzpatrick types and a considered option for concerns such as melasma. It is important to be honest: no peel is zero risk. In deeper Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin, any resurfacing carries a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is temporary darkening after the skin is irritated. Our approach is deliberately conservative. We start low and slow, patch and observe how your skin responds, avoid over-treating, and pair every course with diligent daily SPF, because sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for pigment. For melasma in particular we set realistic expectations. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition that is managed rather than cured, and it responds best to gentle, consistent care alongside sun protection rather than aggressive treatment.

Suitability, protocol and expectations are confirmed at your in-person assessment. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

The Skin Avenue difference

Resurfacing designed for every skin tone.

Peels have a reputation for being risky on darker skin, and for good reason, because the wrong peel on melanin-rich skin can trigger pigmentation rather than clear it. We built our approach around avoiding exactly that. Every peel is selected and adjusted for your Fitzpatrick type, we build intensity gradually rather than reaching for the strongest option, and we pair your course with sun protection so your results last.

  • Gentle, well-tolerated formulations selected for your tone
  • Conservative, start-low-and-slow protocols
  • PIH risk explained honestly, never dismissed
  • Daily SPF built into every plan

Why Skin Avenue

The Korean, barrier-first way to peel.

Rather than reaching for the harshest treatment, we protect and support your skin barrier first, then resurface with the gentlest peel that will do the job. Every plan is personalised, every formulation is chosen for your tone, and every outcome we describe is honest and realistic. That is how we help you get clearer, more even skin without the irritation or pigmentation that harsher, one-size peels can cause.

Questions

Good to know.

What does an LHA·LA peel treat? 01

An LHA·LA peel treats pigmentation, congestion, acne marks, enlarged pores, dullness and uneven texture by gently resurfacing the skin. It uses Lipo-Hydroxy and Lactic Acid to lift tired surface cells and reveal smoother, clearer, more even skin. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

Is a chemical peel safe for darker skin and melasma? 02

Yes, when chosen carefully. We select gentle formulations and build intensity gradually, which makes our peels suitable for all Fitzpatrick types including melanin-rich skin. No peel is zero risk, and deeper skin tones carry a real risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, so our approach is conservative. For concerns such as melasma we take a tailored, cautious approach, pair every course with daily SPF, and set realistic expectations, because melasma is managed rather than cured.

Do you offer a mandelic acid peel in Perth? 03

Mandelic acid is a gentle, large-molecule acid often discussed for darker skin, and it belongs to the same family of considered, superficial acids as the Lipo-Hydroxy and Lactic Acid in our LHA·LA system. What matters most is matching the right acid, strength and protocol to your skin, which your therapist decides with you at your assessment rather than applying one recipe to everyone.

Is there downtime or peeling? 04

A LHA·LA peel is designed to be gentle, so many clients experience only mild dryness or light flaking for a few days. Stronger protocols may cause more visible peeling. Your therapist explains what to expect for your chosen peel before you begin.

Does a peel hurt? 05

Most clients describe a mild tingling or warmth during the peel that settles quickly. Because we use gentle, superficial formulations applied for a measured time, it is designed to be comfortable and tolerable. Tell your therapist how your skin feels at any point and they will adjust.

How many sessions will I need? 06

Peels generally work best as a short course spaced a few weeks apart, with the number tailored to your concern and skin. Results build with each session. Your therapist recommends a realistic plan at your assessment. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

How soon will I see results? 07

Many clients notice a brighter, fresher look within days of a peel as the surface refreshes, while improvements in pigmentation and texture build gradually across a course. Peels support steady, cumulative change rather than an instant transformation, which is why a planned course works best.

What aftercare is needed? 08

Aftercare usually involves gentle cleansing, plenty of hydration, avoiding strong active ingredients for a few days and diligent sun protection. We give you clear guidance so your skin heals well and you get the best result from each peel. Daily SPF is especially important for protecting your results and reducing the risk of pigmentation.

Can I combine a peel with other treatments? 09

Often, yes. Peels pair well with LED therapy to calm and support healing, and with skin needling as part of a broader plan for texture and pigmentation. We space and sequence treatments carefully so your skin is never over-treated, and we plan the right combination with you at your assessment.

Can I have a peel while pregnant? 10

Peels are generally not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We will always discuss your circumstances at your assessment and can suggest gentler alternatives such as a hydrating facial or LED therapy in the meantime.

How much does a chemical peel cost in Perth? 11

Because peels are planned as a course tailored to your skin, we confirm real pricing at your assessment when we know exactly what you need. Single peels and courses are both available. Enquire online or call 0402 991 762 and we will guide you.
