We aim to improve texture, not chase a quick fix.

In short

Acne scarring and rough texture happen when past breakouts change how the skin heals and rebuilds collagen. At Skin Avenue we help soften scars and refine texture with skin needling, medical peels and LED therapy, matched to your scar type and skin tone. These treatments can improve the look of scarring over a course of sessions, but they do not erase it, and results vary from person to person.

Understanding the concern

Why acne leaves scars
and uneven texture.

Knowing which type of scarring you have is the first step to treating it well.

When a breakout goes deep, it can damage the collagen and tissue beneath the surface. As the skin repairs, it sometimes makes too little collagen, which leaves a small depression, or too much, which leaves a raised bump. Add in enlarged pores, rough patches and the flat marks left behind after a pimple clears, and the result is skin that reads as uneven in both tone and texture.

It helps to separate two things. True scars are a change in the skin structure, and they need treatments that rebuild collagen over time. Post-inflammatory marks, the flat brown, red or purple spots a breakout can leave, are a change in colour, and they often fade with time and supportive care. Most people have a mix of both, which is why we assess your skin in person first.

The main types

Rolling, boxcar, ice-pick
and texture.

Different scar shapes respond differently, so a good plan often combines treatments.

Type 01

Rolling

Broad, shallow dips with soft, sloping edges that give the skin a gently wavy, uneven look, most visible in side lighting.

Type 02

Boxcar

Round or oval depressions with more defined edges, a little like a shallow crater, often across the cheeks and temples.

Type 03

Ice-pick

Narrow, deep pits that look like a small puncture in the skin. These are the most stubborn and usually need a patient, layered plan.

Type 04

Texture & pores

Rough patches, enlarged pores and general unevenness that is not a true scar but still affects how smooth and clear the skin looks.

Most people have a combination of these, which is why we tailor and often layer treatments rather than relying on one. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

Lead treatment · Renew

Dermapen 4 Skin Needling

Controlled micro-channels trigger the skin to rebuild collagen, which can soften the depth of rolling and boxcar scars and refine overall texture over a course.

Best for: rolling, boxcar and general texture. Performed conservatively and tone-aware, with depth and frequency eased for higher Fitzpatrick types.

LHA·LA Medical Peels

A medical-grade peel using Lipo-Hydroxy and Lactic Acid to lift dull surface cells, smooth rough texture and help even out the marks left behind after breakouts.

Best for: texture, congestion and post-breakout marks. Started conservatively after patch testing, especially for darker skin.

Dermalux LED Therapy

Clinically calibrated light that calms active breakouts and inflammation, which supports healing and helps limit the new marks and scarring that fresh acne can cause.

Best for: active or inflamed acne and recovery support. Gentle, no downtime and tone-safe across all skin types.

These treatments are designed to improve the look of scarring and texture over a course, not to remove scars completely. We do not resurface active, inflamed acne until it has settled. Suitability is confirmed at a personalised assessment. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

Honest expectations

What treatment can, and cannot, do.

Scarring is one of the areas where honesty matters most, so we set realistic expectations rather than promise a result no treatment can deliver.

  • We aim to improve and soften scarring, not erase it completely
  • Results build gradually over a course, not in a single visit
  • Deeper ice-pick scars are the most stubborn and respond slowest
  • Consistent daily SPF is essential to protect your results
  • Individual results vary and are never guaranteed

Treating scarring on
melanin-rich skin.

Darker skin can be treated well, but it needs a careful, pigmentation-aware approach.

Resurfacing treatments such as needling and peels create controlled injury to prompt renewal, and on melanin-rich skin that carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the flat dark marks that can follow inflammation. It does not mean these treatments are off the table. It means conservative settings, patch testing, barrier support and diligent sun protection, matched to your Fitzpatrick type.

We will always be honest about this. No treatment can promise zero risk of pigmentation, and we will tell you plainly if a gentler first step suits your skin better right now. Read more on our melanin-rich skin page

Questions

Scarring & texture, answered.

Can acne scars be removed completely? 01

Honestly, no. There is no treatment that erases acne scarring entirely. What we can do is improve how scars look, softening their depth and refining the surrounding texture over a course of sessions, so the skin reads as smoother and more even. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.

Which treatment is best for my scarring? 02

It depends on your scar type and skin tone, which is why we start with a personalised assessment. As a guide, skin needling suits rolling, boxcar and general texture, medical peels help texture and post-breakout marks, and LED supports skin with active breakouts. We often layer treatments for a better result.

How many sessions will I need? 03

Scarring and texture respond gradually, so a course is usually needed rather than a single visit. The exact number depends on your scars and how your skin responds. We set a realistic plan at your assessment and review your progress along the way.

What is the difference between a scar and a dark mark? 04

A scar is a change in the skin structure, a dip or raised area, and it needs treatments that rebuild collagen. A dark mark left after a breakout is a change in colour, and it often fades with time and supportive care, while true scars need active treatment.

Is treatment safe for darker skin? 05

Yes, with care. Resurfacing treatments carry a higher risk of pigmentation on melanin-rich skin, so we use conservative settings, patch testing and sun-protection guidance matched to your Fitzpatrick type. We will always be honest if a gentler option suits you better right now.
